OK it's not the preferred engine, but it's all I have. Will it safely power the plane? I do not do any fancy stuff, this would be basically scale flying.

HOBBSY, THANKS FOR THE INFO.

Gary
Just wanted to confirm, I have a FA80 not an 82.

You can't really go by the smoke trail of a Saito like you can with an OS. A decent smoke trail on a Saito generally means it is too rich.

Gents, I have a FA 100 and have lost the set screw in the HS needle. I have tried set screws from various wheel collars and other misc parts and can't find any that work.

Any suggestions on replacement?

Most of the set screws in the Japanese and Chinese engines are the same. Can you rob a set screw from a needle valve in another engine?

Most of the Great Planes, and Dubro wheel collars are inch and not metric.

Yes and if you slowly click the needle in between flights you still get way smoky trails and max performance that is repeatable for months of flying.

I agree with a little smoke, but I meant not like a 2 stroke, etc.

I pretty much tune mine like Hobbsy does. You can pretty much get away with not touching the high speed needle most of the time. Saitos are smooth, powerful, and barely sip fuel when tuned dead on.

When I say smoke I mean just a little bit not like a 2 stroke.  What kills most model a/c engines is running to lean by having a smoke trail you know fule / oil is going through the engine.  With the YS we have smoke on the ground and a small trail in the air and in case you don't think that is running it hard consider the following an 88inch w/s Feathermerchant (O/T) in 30 secs gives an apparent wing span of the lenght of my little finger.  The model weighs 3.75 pound.  With an 85% Lamzo Bomber with a Saito 65 fitted and set up for duration (30 seconds) same effect with a 13 x 6 Bolly prop, BUT with a Texaco set up (re configged needles both high and low speed to predetermined levels) same model with a 15 x 8 prop in a 5 pound (actually 4 pound 9 ounces) allowance (15mls) fuel load will go to the same height with an engine run of around 6 to 7 minutes.
It is all in the handling of the engine and this is with a new engine as I had to pull the old one after 15 years for a set of bearings to be changed (don't make like they used to)
Lastly it is interesting to see a set of data for running in engines for you guys in the USA as opposed to what we get with our engines directly from Japan.  As I have said before there are marked differences

I have looked for a similar size and couldn't find one but I have 2 more 2 strokes I can try. I will also go to a hardware store and look for some very tiny bolts and maybe get lucky and find a set screw. Thanks for the reply.

That muffler should be supported somewhere other than by the cylinder head attachment point. You're asking for a head replacement otherwise.

Ed, if my memory serves me correctly that muffler is filled with pieces of fuel tubing that the exhaust has to pass through serving as a diffuser to quiet and engine. They weren't popular nor long lasting. If I'm wrong somebody straighten me out.

Re the muffler, it is an Du Bro Arise I thought they were intended for 2 strokes, with their tuning effect, but they were marketed before the increase of 4 stroke popularity (I think).

I am thinking that there was a plate baffle with holes into which pieces of fuel line were inserted????????. I guess you could tailor the tuning or muffling by changing the length or size of the tubing??????? I could be wrong, my memory often fails me.

Dubro made at least two different mufflers under the Arise label. A 2 stroke and a 4 stroke version.
The two stroke version has multiple steps to fit different diameter mufflers and you remove the back half od a OEM muffler and plug the Arise in accordingly. It was fairly expensive and it did work. But I suspect modellers were turned off by the cost of it,
Here is the two stroke version.

Lots of interesting stuff here, especially on setup and tuning. I didn't realise the break-in can take so long.
Re the radials: does anyone actually prime the engine using the syringe method? I've never seen it mentioned on any forum...

According to Saito the engines are ready to fly in 40 minutes, just keep it a little rich for another hour and have your way with it.

I wondered how the interior was configured in that muffler.

Good to see you posting again, Dave.

BLW has the Saito Club numbers

It is best for you to put your number in your signature when you find out what it is.
