The .82 turns a 14x6 about the same as the .91 did.

Not only do the 120/150/180/220 engines have the spring in the carburetor, it seems that the 56/62/72/82/91/100/115 have them also.

Part # SAI91S90 is used in the 82-115 engines while the smaller engines use a similar part. Scroll down on the page linked below, it's the 7th part illustration down.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...-al-SAIE115#t4

Seems to me that some slight relief cut into the end of the FA125 carbuetor barrel for clearance would allow room for this.

Why in the world did Saito eliminate this on just the 125?
[/quote]

SrTele, I'm thinking about the same..Thanks for the link I will order that spring and let's see if I'm lucky enough to fix this issue

Thanks guys. I looked at the Horizon Hobby website. It shows the new case 82 (FA-82b). Is that spraybar the same as mine?

I plan on using this engine on a Great Planes U-Can-Do 46. So, I need a 3D prop. The maximum recommended prop pitch for that plane is a x6. So, would a 14x4W or a 14x6 work with the FA-82?
the spray bars ae the same

Great, thanks for the info. I will order it today.

I also seem to recall from previous discussions here that the plastic crankcase backplate could cause some vibration issues? Would the latest metal version be of any benefit?

From what I've read here the metal back plate is of great benefit, I never had problems with the plastic backplate and Dar now has my .72 and has not any problem either.

Thanks Hobbsy. If the metal backplate from the new case will work on the older version, I might purchase it anyway and try it out. For sure I will get the spraybar.

From what I remember, only one person posted about problems with his 82 plastic backplate.

My 72 gave me and W8YE a lot of headaches.

Hsukaria,
I'm the one who had troubles with the .82 and the plastic backplate. The engine was mounted on a plastic beam mount and that was flexing in addition to the backplate flexing - allowed the intake tube to move away from the head, causing a very poor, unreliable idle. The metal backplate fixed it for good. I have two .72s with plastic backplates, but no troubles in 9 years. One of the club members had a .72 with a plastic backplate that DID NOT have the 45 degree "butresses" under the carb mount. That was nothing but trouble until we changed it.
Good luck,
Jim

Hey guys, I was welcomed to the Saito fraternity last month, but I didn't see what membership number that I was assigned.  Since last month, I've acquired a 120 and a 90 twin to my collection.  Cheers, Russell!

Thanks for the advice guys. Since I am having to order the spraybar, I might as well order the crankcase backplate.

What engines are allowed in the SPA?
Beginning this year (2013) ....any stock two stroke up to and including .65 and any stock 4 stroke up to and including a .95 (it can have a pump) with no superchargers, turbo chargers, pipes, etc. are allowed. Ijust found out that the largets prop allowed is a 13". I'm running a 13x8 on my FA-91 and it performs very well.

The idea is to keep it competitive and affordable. The link to the SPAwebsite will answer more questions and don't be afraid to shoot them an email for clariifcation.
The 2013 Competitior's Guide should be ready for download any day now. The manueuvers for each clsss are available for download from the site.
Be sure to check out the contest calendar for a contest near you.

Hello folks, it's been some time since I last posted in this thread. Wow! 950 pages already and still going strong!

Anyway, I just wanted to ask a quick question: I have a Saito 82 (old case) and I need to get the engine gasket set. Will the Saito 91 gaskets fit the old 82 http://www.horizonhobby.com/products...k-ee-SAI91S32A ? Thanks!

PS. It seems to be out of stock at Horizon and elsewhere. Any ideas where it's available? What I really need is the cam gear housing gasket

Mike, the .72 gasket set would probably fit, although it only has the rocker cover gaskets ans O- rings. There does not appear to be a backplate gasket.

Hobbsy, thanks for the info. The other option I have is to make my own gasket. I could use the ultra copper RTV, but I would prefer to cut out my own gasket. What material can I use, and how thick? Does the gasket thickness have any influence on the cam-pushrod operation?

The cam gear housing sets the cam gear clearance, I think that a paper grocery bag gasket would be perfect.

The only difference between the old & new case 82 should be the cam housing gasket & as pointed out, you can make one from a grocery bag.

It would be a shame to ruin the photo!! Anyway, we know you get those mags for the inspiring writing, not the pictures.

Read your post and was wondering if the engine has had a big nose first dive into the ground recently, with the prop off and spinning it does the crank look like it has any runout?

The thunder tigre 75 is a good reliable engine,as you know, the eighty two is lighter and much more powerful if you are flying it in something like a decathlon. It's a buzz
I eyeballed the prop movement as I rotated the crank. I couldn't see any visible travel/runout. I don't have any precise instrumentation to measure for very small runout. I will check it with a measuring stick when I run it on the test stand. I guess that is still be than using the old *****ometer.

I am seeking some advise on a Saito .40. I was flying my P-51 and everything was going great till the engine quit. This Saito has been run for a while with nothing but perfect service, onriches brew 15% nitro turning a 11x6 prop. It seems that the lower end of the conrod broke. I am wondering if I should just fix that or replace the engine as I have another NIB waiting. Any thoughts as to what could have caused this?

Thanks,

Dave

Since you have a new one, I would replace it. You can send the broken to me.

Are you sure about what is broken?
