I found a con rod for my 91 for $15. If no other internal damage it would definitely be worth it.

I've fixed several non-Saito's with broken con-rods or cranks. Assuming no other internal damage just replace it and try again. Can't see why a Saito would be any different.

If you have any doubts about the motor use it in a low risk application....not that a plane should crash due to a broken rod...

I had a rod fail on another motor at 75% RPM. It simply broke at the small end and (luckily) caught on the bottom of the cylinder sleeve without hurting anything. Fixed it and it's fine. The cause was a broken E-clip from a rocker arm getting down into the bottom end and jamming things up...at least that's what I believe happened.

Pope, never had a problem with HHQ, my problems were with the LHS that consolidated orders (keeps freight costs down), they are a tad difficult and yes they do stretch the truth (my question re GK 56's and them saying no such thing, I showed them 2 I bought ack from Hong Kong, that was around hand over time).  Once you "catch them out (like others such as Telstra) I find you have a better relationship.
Like I said I have no problems getting stuff from them but I guess my willingness to go to Japan to get stuff helps also because they know I will in a flash.
Old fart you are definitely warped but then again if you are destroying good literature I guess that shows you are "really past it"
The rain has gone away sun is out and we watch the blue and green on the radar as the weather builds up in the SE corner

Broken Connecting Rod? I have no idea how that might have happened. My Saito 40 is indestructible. I have more hours on that engine over the last 5 years than probably all my others combined.

The lower end must have seized on the crank or something. I've never heard of that fuel. I love Wildcat 15% Premium Extra.

In your shoes, I'd probably install the new engine and carefully inspect the broken one for further damage. Then replace the rod if everything else looks good.

I know that I've been behind in catching up with the Saito Club member numbers. Let me know if I forgot somebody.

792 JohnB96041
793 tarcure
794 jazzboy
795 108buzz
796 cperri
797 soliex
798 oldfartpilot

We are almost at 800 members. If you own a Saito and don't have a member number, let me know. I also take bribes, so send me any engines you care to box up.

I replaced the engine with a new one. I am not sure why the rod siezed on the crank pin. Half of it is stuck to the crank pin and the top half connecting to the piston is distorted and shattered. I am pretty suprized because this Saito .40 was the best running engine I have had. I hope its replacement runs as well. I will take it apart and try to figure out what went wrong, but first I have to break in the new one.

WOW, I would be thinking of using a different fuel.

Saito recommend at least 20% oil in these engines,  they tend to seize if run with less and on the lean side of rich.
This data comes from the info supplied by Saito Japan, not Horizon.

G'day

I love days like this. Warm (actually quite hot later on at about 35 degrees C - 95 degrees F), gentle winds and my first flight for about a six weeks as I have been in Europe visiting family over Christmas.

Pulled the old Kadet Senior out to give a lesson to a new pilot. She had not been flown for a couple of months. Power is a Saito 62.

Filled her up with the usual 10% fuel, opened the throttle fully, blocked the muffler exit and turned her over by hand about 5 times until fuel dripped from the carby.

Applied the glow and hit her with the starter. In about 5 revolutions she was purring just like a Saito should.

The Saito hauled the big Kadet Senior around for about 20 minutes while my student and I did some proceedure turns, circuits and figure eights. We landed and took off four times with him doing the final three take offs and me doing the landings.

The wind was all over the place which just made it interesting. Even his wife was impressed.

Great start to the day. Oh and did I say I love Saitos?

Most pleasant post I've read in a while.

But I hate you! It's been below 0° F for days here & I'm workin' on a new set of knees so I can't XC ski, but we lost the snow base a week ago anyway so my wife can't ski either!

Grrrrrrrrr. [>:]

SrTelemaster150, I didn't live as far north as you, but in NYC. That's one of the reasons I moved down here. It was 75 degrees at the field today with no wind and sunny. More of the same for the next week. I love winter down here.

I love spring summer & fall up here, & when I'm fit & we have snow, I enjoy the winter.

I would have skied to day had I been able & there was snow. It was just bbelow 0°F, but it was calm & sunny. I would have proably stripped to a lined flannel shirt W/poly-pro underwear after 1/2 mile or so.

I'm laid up this winter getting bothye knees replaced. Lasr winter sucked. We had 3 or 4 good bases & itvrained everytime & melted them away.

That's what got me out of shape & then my knees locked up.

Yeah, yeah. Rub it in!!! I have been having to go to the Michigan Upper Peninsula for work. No hope of even dreaming about flying. And I won't be retiring anytime soon to move south (not for another 20 years, if at all). At least I can try to test my new used Saito 82 later this winter.

G'day SrTelemaster150

I am glad you enjoyed my little post. There is nothing better than taking a plane which has languished for a while and having the engine (Saito of course) purr into life at the first attempt. It is even better when it is a nice day and the flying is good.

Up until recently I have been using fuel with 5% castor, 15% Klotz, 10% nitro and 70% methanol. In my most recent mix I reduced the castor to 2.5% and built the Klotz up to 17.5%. I did this because I had found that when I left a Saito sitting for a few weeks, the small amount of fuel which remained in the carby would dry out and leave a plug of dried castor which could be difficult to shift when I next tried to start the engine. I seem to have found the sweet spot. This time the engine sat for about two months but did not have any problems starting.

Interestingly, this problem only happened to me with Saitos. My OS four strokes (one older Surpass, one Alpha and two V series) did not seem to have this problem and my ASP/Magnum ones don't either. They always start easily even after quite long rest periods. I put this down to different carby designs.

It is about the same temperature here today (36 degrees C - 97 degrees F) and the wind is moderate so flying today would be good too. But I am off to a BBQ at a friend's place so no flying today. There is tomorrow though which promises to be similar.

I now understand snow better too. My month away was in Switzerland where they specialise in snow in winter. My daughter-in-law took us to the top of the mountain called Santis where I managed to sink into the snow and break through at least two layers. At least you can brush show off or I would have been drenched as I was only wearing jeans. Luckily no one thought to take a photo.

Cheers

Mike in Oz

Snow is the result of poor planning and genetics. If things had gone right we'd all live in a location with perfect flying weather, lots of money and time to spend on this hobby and good friends to share it with.

Well, I guess one out of three is all I can expect...........................

It's been the coldest in quite a few years here, (mind you, preheating a heli in the bush at 55 below is about the worst I've experienced and getting definitely too old to put up with it now) but as for snow this has not been a real problem yet this year. In fact, haven't mounted the skis on anything.
