RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
I received the plans to a Turbinator today. It is a large plane similar in size to the Boomerang Sprint. After flying the Sprint with a 14lb. Wren I think it would be better suited to an 18-22 lb. turbine if you want to do aerobatics. I have a Nano on order and plan on putting the Wren on it. I would like to build a scaled down Turbinator also. Does anyone offer plans to a smaller version?
Thanks for any help.
Hal

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
I have about 50 flights on mine. I installed a P-120 and it is way overpowered. The plane flies greatand many people at rallies have comented that it's shame its not a scale plane otherwise they would build one. Mine is built as per the plans other than the size of the fuel cell (100oz tank from my Roo) and the P-120 for power. The first takeoff was less than 50 feet and lands very slow with a little crow in the ailerons with 50 degrees flap. Robart gear has been ok overallbut wished it was a little beefier especially the nose gear pivot axle, bent 2 of these and now carry a spare one with me.I took out the main gear mounts on a bad cross windlanding at too high a desent rate and glassed the section when I reienstalled the gear mounts, that's the only section I would beef up on the plane. Nick was working on a two piece wing but don't know if he finished it yet.

Hey Ron, Do ya have some pics of your Turb. I talked to Nick back before the holidays and he said he may never finish the two Pc. wing one but you know how that goes. He may get giggy and do it. Hal, Nick does a small E-flight Ver. of the turbinator and you can get one at laser design. Shok and Limy have them and I think Shok has a Vid of one somewhere on this site.

I checked with Nick and you can get any size plan you like. The price is the same as the full size. I would like to have one 85% of the original size but hate to spend another $57. Maybe I can find someone to trade with.

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
Hello Hal,
Thats good. Nick is pretty good about working with ya on stuff like that. I'v built Sev of his designs and like them a great deal. I will build the little E-Turb before it's over with and will get Bob and Shok's kit to do it. Give Bob a PM and see if he can do a 85% kit for you. He will be the one I send any of my plans to from now on. His Jet Mach 60 sport made a believer out of me. I will more than likely build two of his Jet Mach 100" this winter for our airshow team. Good luck with what you do and keep us up to date with some Pics. Roy aka Hooker53

shok, I didn't even know something like this was in the works. Thats got to be a dandy. Halthere ya go. Would love to see a build thread on this one. Can you even dream what this one would be with a 14# turbine in it?? Thanks Shok. Hope your over the L-39. BUTdo ya ever get over one like that?? Ha. Later

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
OK guys, how are the Turbinators coming?
I'm back on the little one again. Sheeting the top of the wings, flaps are done. I will finish sheeting this week, finish up the ailerons maybe this week (ga jets this weekend). Then mate the wing to the fuse, do the intakes. Then it goes home to it's owner.
Then I start mine!

I'm busy on my Turbinator (full size). I have made many mods since mine will look like a semi-scale TS-11 Jet. So far it is going well. Some of the mods include moving the wing up into the fuse 1/2", shrinking the rudder a bit, and rounding everything while adding a much changed canopy. I'll try to drop some build photos so everyone can see the progress.

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
Hi all,
I test flew my mates turby a few weeks ago (no pics yet),it took off so quick (120 se)and was very stable once we put a fair amount of aeileron and down elevator trims in,well it felt like lots of trim but it was only about 4 clicks[sm=spinnyeyes.gif].
The flight was simple and kept down to four minutes (3litres of fuel).
I had briefly tried the flaps, but as the plane rolled abit i thought better to use very little flap and an approach that downwind appeared to be quite slow, surely by the time it was ready to touch down, the speed would be about right,so down wind turn into final, coming towards me,slowly dropping to head height and then i realised just how quick it was still travellins so,with the end of the runway fast approacing and at waist height i finally hit the throttle wide open-THANK the lord for the fast spool up and just as it was getting trouser shakinly close to the ground, the engine punched it out of trouble,i went round again and still only used a small amount of flap but slowed it down earlier,it still arrived at good speed but luckily, not too much.
I got it down ok but had a small problem(which every one agreed was not my fault) and parted one retract complete with bearers from the wing,it has since been fixed as well as strengthend and just waiting for some good weather when i am not working-so just in case any one has any good weather spare, maybe you could send it my way till the end of the week please
Having read with interest about a littlew crow brake with 50 degrees flap-how much up aeileron and is there any pitch tendancy both with or without crow please?
cheers Mark

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
I'm switching mine to split flaps. I like the drag they provide and I am familiar with how they feel.
I mentioned I'd drop some photos of my modified turbinator and here they are. First you can see the significant change in the look by moving the canopy and rounding the plane out. I still have to add some balsa to the bottom to give it the proper look. Once I get the fuse done I'll sheet the wing and get the scoops put on it. I'm modifying the scoops quite a bit also. I moved the wing up 1/2" into the saddle which will allow me to bring in some of the air under the wing in a belly pan. Some of the air will still go over the wing (as per original). As you can see in the rudder photo I have shrunk the vertical stab and rudder quite a bit. I provided the stock rudder profile for comparison. I'm confident my rudder will be plenty to keep this plane stable. I hope to have it finished before spring, so I'll continue to post some progress photos.

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
Making good progress on my Bash of the Turbinator into a semi-scale Ts-11. I have to do a bit more sanding to get everything the right shape, but the structure is done. I have to decide how I'm going to round off the leading edges of the intakes. I think the intakes and extra balsa near the jet exhaust add quite a bit to the scale appearance. I moved the wing up into the fuse 1/2", so I added some intake through the belly pan to compensate. Because it is a straight shot, I think I will have more air available than stock. Not much else to show until I get it painted. The next photos I post will likely be of the completed plane. I weighed the total bare plane with retracts and it came in at about 12 lbs. I should be able to hit my 21 pound dry target.
