RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
Ron, Thanks for the heads up on the crow funtion. I hadn't thought of that. I may try it when ever the snow quits
Dave the " Crow" or " Butterfly" mix raises both your ailerons a bit when the flaps are extended. It acts a speed brake and is very effective. You must have your ailerons on two seperate channels , and all of the transmitters , that I am familiar with , are capable of this function.

Knew about the crow with ailerons, I was thinking it was something built into the wing. My bad. Can't wait to get started on my Turbinator.

I'm sure the crow helps add some drag to make landings easier. I modified my wing for split flaps. I like the drag provided by split flaps on my other warbirds, and wanted my first jet to have a familiar feel. I can come in as steep as I want with full flaps, or just use half flaps when there is a head wind. If I decide to go around again and abort the landing I have to make sure to roll off the flaps, there is so much drag that it is hard to accelerate when they are deployed. Here's a couple of photos showing them down during landings.

RE: 2008 the year of the Turbinator
Im considering this plan as I have a spare P80 . . . Is it a little big? Looks like people are using turned down 120's so it must physically fit?
Thanks in advance for any info . . .
Scott.

A P-80 will work great. My Rabbit has 19lbs of thrust and does not overpower the plane at all. Depending on the age of your P-80, your right in that thrust range. The fuel tank size may be an issue. I used an 80 oz. kevlar tank instead of the 50 oz. recommended. The fuel tank sits on the CG so adding more fuel is not a problem.

I got it straight from Jet-tech. It has an 80oz. capacity and is much like the one shown on the site for the composite ARF python. If I remember right I called Jet-tech and they recommended the tank I recieved. It fit well.

Bob. I don't know what Todd used but I built my tank. Used fiberglass/epoxy resin over foam. I cutout the rear former like the plans show and then cut a foam block to fit, full length from former to servo tray. I covered the foam with econokote and then glassed it. I then split it with my bandsaw and removed the foam, then sealed it up with glass tape. So far it works great, (7 or 8 flights). It holds 100 oz but only about 90 is useable. Plenty enough for a 7 minute flight on the P-70 with reserve.

Todd,
Thanks for the info. I've gotten quite a few tanks from Gary. I may use his again this time...
However, I was thinking about building a tank like Shepp did. From looking at the plans, it looks like there should be room in there for a 10" long, 4.5" high, 5" wide tank, which would hold 124 oz! We don't need that much for a P-70, but being able to do 7-8 minute flights without worrying about it would be nice. I think we have a 70 oz. or so tank in Louie's Reaction, and flight times are surprisingly short with the P-70...
We have the tip tanks mounted on ours and I'm working on the "Banshee" style intakes now. I'll post some pictures when it gets a bit further on...

Bob,
Check your height, Remember the tank cannot be higher than the fuselage sides, the top will interfere. I think I made mine 4.5 x 4.5 . I also should have made a vent bubble in the top where you can fill it completely.
Good luck . Oh yes, I used Epoxy finishing resin to fabricate the tank. It sets up harder than most of the other resins.

Shepp,
Thanks for the tips. I was also thinking of making a hole in the ply floor under the tank so I could put a bubble downwards too to act as a sump...

Looks great Bob, once you get some military markings applied it will look even better. The tip tanks really add a lot to the plane and give it a distinctive appearance. When will you be doing the maiden flight?
I was hoping to make it to Kentucky, but I ended up buying a new house. Maybe next year.

Thanks! It will be painted like the Banshee we posted above, but we're going to fly it in primer first, probably until the end of this season.
The plan is to maiden it at Ky Jets after hours, hopefully on Sunday or Monday. I still have to finish programming the radio...

Bob,
I saw the "banshee" hidden in your trailer in your Ky.Jets posting. I'm looking forward to checking it out. Good luck on the maiden flight. I won't get there until Thursday, hope to see you then.

The maiden flight was a total non-event. A click of trim here and there and it was flying great. A bit of thrust adjustment, cutting down on the aileron throw, and just a touch of down trim with flaps and it was totally dailed in. This thing flys really nice! With a P-70, its not a speedster, but its enough power. Its got a few extra lbs on it with the "scale" do-dads, so its not really a floater on landing either - its just right. I like it!

Square Nozzle - Did you ever complete the P-59 knock off?
I saw early in this thread some one was talking about Nick modifying the wing to be a two piece. Did that ever happen?
Landing gear - What are the suggestion for non-Robart?
I have a p-80 in my Facet now and I think this will be a good winter build.
Thanks
Scott
