RE: CAC Boomerang Project
Hi Puma,
would be possible to make a plan to build this airplane so rare?.
I mean a building plan for the original airplane flying?.
I believe you can achieve this because of original parts you have in the your hangar and you know how to build this aircraft.

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
Hi again
Work continues on the 1/4 scale and the other day Richard had it outside for a "fitting". Just a few pics of the progress so far, looks a bit messy but it is only a plug. The cowl is the mould - not really that heavy
The next challenge is the fairing that goes between the fin, the tailplane and the fuse. Richard is going to try and make that as one piece. It's an incredibly difficult shape to draw with all it's compound curves and will be "interesting" to vacuum form. All the panels are PETG plastic so this has to be the same to give the same texture. Once that nasty piece has been made, we'll be able to make the fuse mould. The tail plane is going to made as two parts not like the one shown in the photos.
I made a pilot "doll" of Tom and sent it to him and his wife this week. They were really thrilled to see him "in uniform" again He hasn't been well - a nasty infection picked up in hospital but hopefully he'll battle on and get over it soon. He's really looking forward to seeing the Boomer flying - aren't we all?
Will keep you posted.
cheers
Patti

Looks IMPRESSIVE !! Well done.
How about a photo with the master builder holding his creation so we can see exactly the size of this monster, Im guessing its about 96" Wingspan.
Look forward to watching its progress.

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
Hi Andrew - this is a true 1/4 scale so the w/s is 108". I thought I had a pic with the master builder in it but can't find a recent one so will try to snap him tomorrow. It does give scale with someone beside it. At the moment Richard is designing a parting board for the mould and also has "knocked up" a 1/6 P-47 plug in foam (around 82") to try out some ideas of moulding a hatch with a lip and a small wing stub that will be used in the moulding of the Boomerang and future projects. The P-47 is such a simple shape so a good one to practise on.
Hi Peter, yes flying is back on the menu although not a lot of it lately. We've joined another group up here where there is absolutely no BS. They had their meeting to elect the committee which took all of about 10 minutes and there wont be another until next year - unless there's something that needs attention. It's about having fun and flying and not all the politics so that suits us fine Very refreshing actually.
cheers

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
Hi All
After some deliberation Richard has decided to leave the 1/5th scale Boomer for now and just do the 1/4 scale. We've had plans to do the 1/5 after the 1/4 was finished but there are too many other projects waiting in the wings and not enough time - or storage space to fit everything in. If/when time permits in the future it would be good to revisit the 1/5scale Boomerang but everything learnt along the way it would be done differently
Over the past few months we've had a number of requests to take on the 1/5 scale moulds but as mentioned we were unsure of what we were doing with it so apologies to those I didn't reply to.
So the time has come and if anyone would like to continue on with the project there's a bundle of "bits". Two plugs, a mould, a fuse from the mould, cowl and cowl mould, one wing section plug ........ Take a look at the photos.
We're going to list it all on Ebay when I get a moment and will let you know the link if anyone is interested. There will be NO delivery or packaging up to send, it's pick up only. We just want to move it out and move on.
On to the 1/4 scale - the parting board is being made and it's very exciting because we can see that it could be ready to mould almost as soon as next weekend.
cheers

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
All your data re a/c weighinh in excess of 7 kg is some what mixed up check out the MAAA website MOP's and it is all clearly outlined including the responsibilities and duties of inspectors.
And just in case you are thinking of "bending the rules" CASR 101 provides a penality of up to 50 penality points (one point = a min of $1000) and yo blow your insurance if you have an accident (with all the additional penalties that incurs) and your club gets in the pooh incredibilous.
I have some very original plans of that Tingalpa club build about 4 pages woth very comprehensive. e mail me privately if you or any one else is interested

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
That looks really cool, thanks for posting it. I think it's the little kit that Richard bought for reference of shapes and it was horrendously expensive but is accurate in shape. It's still in 1000 pieces so it's lovely to see one built.
Does anyone know the width and height of cover strip on the wing join? Richard is up to moulding that. It's looking fantastic and the fuse is basically ready to mould. We've been trialling out methods on a smaller, simpler shape of an 82" P-47 which has turned out brilliantly so it'll be on with confidence with the Boomer. The wings are 3/4 the way there as well, some pics when I get a chance.
cheers

Thanks James. We actually went out to the airport here in Bundy today where a friend is helping with a Havard restoration and were able to measure the actual cover strip. And yep, it is 4", but only 1" high. A couple of pics attached.

Patti,
Just thought I'd let you know the cowl and canopy for my 124" Corsair were a success without all the hassles. Because I made them myself!!! I will add the scoops and cooling flaps later.[X(]

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
The 1/4 scale Boomer is really powering on now and the 3 parts of the fuse mould have been made. It's now sitting out in the sun post curing. The wing plugs have been cut and panelling started so shouldn't be too long before they'll be moulded as well. Richard has found some exciting alternatives for powering the U-Beaut as well which is really driving him to get it finished. I'll do a more detailed posting about that later. Just thought I'd put a couple of pics of the mould to show progress is happening
Also, young Eric took out a gold medallion on the weekend at a show and is proudly wearing it. He can still sway the ladies

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
It's so tempting to leave you hanging Craig , but to put you out of your misery ..... the first concern was the batteries to fly it. The plane will come in around 30-35lb which means it needs 3500 watts. In the past Richard has found that 30lb+ planes needed 4 x 5S 5000mA lipos which generally run out around $300-$400 each. Charging these at the field is impractical, they can't be fast charged so we'd be looking at maybe another set so $2,500-$3000 to fly it
Richard has recently found a supply of the new improved A123 batteries for $9 each instead of the $22 each that they used to be and has been playing with some of these on a smaller scale. The claims that they can be discharged at 60C and charged at 10C seem to be right. The main problem is getting a charger that can do this. Basically this means that you can put 48 of these (built in, not needing hatches to remove) into the plane for less than $450 and that's it for batteries. There are lots of advantages - they are a more robust chemistry etc and the only disadvantage is that they are a bit heavier than lipos - about 25% heavier for the same power. BUT, in a warbird where they all seem to require nose weight this is actually an advantage. They can be soldered together in any configuration so for the Boomerang Richard is going to put them into a circle around the inside of the cowl flaps.
The other thing is the motor. He has an Axi 5360 which should fly it, but if, in reality it's marginal, he's recently discovered some other options. The Hacker A100 looks promising or even the new Turnigy CA170-20 would rip the wings off it
The 3 part mould has come out beautifully. This was the look on Richard's face We'll lay up the composite and should have a shell by the weekend. Work on the wing plugs is powering on so ...... all is good.
The methods learnt doing this build have worked so well that Richard's next "to do" list is a 1/4 scale Spitfire and a 1/4 scale P-47! Then there's the Lanc of course but not in 1/4 scale We'd have to trade the ute in on a semi
What's happening in your neck of the woods Craig? What's on your building board?
Photos of the fuse next week hopefully.
cheers

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
hey patti,
had lots of er events recently that have not allowed me to do much at all. mostly cos we have bought another house, and are trying to sell the one we are in. new house has a nice big garage that i can use as a build room and it is on the flat so my daughter can wander around outside without having to worry about snakes or tumbling off retaining walls etc. new place also backs onto a football field. so i have aflying site right over my back fence
anyway with all the opens, and with quite a bit of additional furnature moved into my current shed i havent been able to reach the building board
i have been working on the 109 plans and i am getting close to cutting material. I am also going to order a 1.5kW spindle for the router and probably do as you guys ahave done and go for a set of linear rails instead of the current arrangement.
all in all a very eventful couple of months but on the improve now.
all the best to both of you.

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
I didn't get notification of your post Craig, little hiccups on the forums at times. Moving house is a pain but hopefully worth it when the dust settles. You'll love the spindle, good move.
Richard has been charging on and has now layed up the 3 fuse moulds so when the bottom cures tomorrow he'll be able to bolt it together and join it up. One half wing has been panelled and moulded and he just ordered some wheels today so it wont be too long before there's a fuse running around. It's only taken 3 years!
We stay in regular contact with Tom, the old Boomerang pilot and he is busting to see it flying - aren't we all He's coming up when it's flyable and has almost booked the dinner table for the celebrations He's had a really rough trot lately, had shoulder surgery and while in hospital they gave him Golden Staff so has been on an antibiotic drip for weeks which has knocked him around but he's tough as old boots and still going well. He'll be 90 at Christmas.
Will get some pics of the joined fuse - how exciting
cheers

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
Well it didn't happen over night but it did happen
Finally, the 1/4 scale fuse joined and out of the mould. What an amazing moment. It's still looking a little rough, needs a bit of trimming and tidying but all the detail has come out amazingly. AND ....... it only weighs around 2kg. Should be able to bring the finished one in around the 30lb mark. Aiming to have it in the air by the end of next month, just with a fixed undercarriage for starters.
On with wing making and wing mould making.
cheers

RE: CAC Boomerang Project
I went to the Temora airshow last October and saw two (the only 2?) Boomerangs flying together. An awsome sight and sound. They really howl. I think the exhaust acts like a big deep whistle. It was a great weekend. Also 2 Spitfires flying together, Sabre, Vampire, Canberra, Meteor all flying and Matt Hall flying a Mustang!
Looks like a great project (well beyond my skills). Look forward to seeing the progress.

WoW!!!
This model is looking amazing, I wish I had the capabilities to build composite frames from scratch. I would love to know if you are planning on selling a few frames when your finished. I fell in love with boomerangs the first time I saw one. Currently I'm putting a Moki 150 radial into a composite Yak-11 from skygate in germany. If you Boomer comes in at the weight you suggest The 150 radial should be just about right for it. Keep up the great work I cant wait to see it a scale rally!

Hi P4Patti and Bundy,
I too would like to purchase an airframe if you intend to sell a few. I thought a Moki 250 may be very sweet up the front end of one of your airframes.
Thanks Adam.
